This is an urban design proposal for a new tram line that connects the suburban area of Rio with the new port of Patras. The tram line replaces the old railway overcoming the existing boundaries that divide the city and its waterfront. This new infrastructure gives the opportunity to create new public spaces along the tram line and activate the dead zones around the old rail network.

The design proposal focuses on five tram stations that are designed as nodal public spaces:

03

Rio Station: This is the transfer station from the national railway to the tram line. The connection from the railway terminal to the new tram line defines the position of the platforms.

Panachaiki Stadium Station: This station is situated between Panachaiki’s football station and the city’s marina at the seafront. A hidden stream is restored along this axis so that a new linear public space is developed next to the tram station.

Agios Dionisios Stations: This is the area of the existing train depot that will be abandoned after the replacement of the railway by the tram line. A new park is proposed at this area which is divided by the tram line. Two tram stations are created in the park, which include recreational and cultural activities, in order to adjoin the segmented public spaces.

Agiou Nikolaou Station: The old central train station of the city is reused by the tram line. The overall design of the public space proposes the restoration of the city’s natural shoreline. Three pedestrian bridges are created in the area in order to connect the city with its waterfront.

South Port Station: The terminal of the tram line is placed in the “terrain vague” area of the new port. The elevated structure of the station creates a new landmark at this area. The linear building includes new facilities for the passengers offering panoramic views to the port area.
